THE MINDY PROJECT 3×20 Photo Preview: Orange is the new Mindy?

Mindy Season 3 Cast HQ

I know Mindy hasn’t gotten a lot of airplay here at TYLL since Christmas, but I’m so excited to see Orange is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox guest star this week as Tamra’s cousin Sheena that I couldn’t help sharing the anticipation with you all, too.

As if the show wasn’t name-dropping it all over the place enough as it is, How I Met Your Mother‘s Cristin Milioti (also of the late A to Z fame) also makes an appearance, and Julia Stiles returns as Morgan’s girlfriend Jessica. (Am I the only one who totally forgot Jessica existed?)

Plus, I really want to know what the deal is with this pajama party, so it looks like there’s a lot going on in “What To Expect When You’re Expanding” tomorrow at 9:30pm on FOX.

Nels knew how to operate a TV remote control before she knew how to talk. As a result, she has spent an inordinate amount of time pretending she actually lives on a soundstage. When she isn’t watching whichever show is currently capturing her heart, she is writing about how said show is currently capturing her heart. She loves pie.

It’s finally here, people: Christmas comes to New York, and along with it Mindy’s secret proposal deadline for Danny. Not surprisingly, Danny is freaking out a little, while Mindy throws him a curveball he definitely didn’t see coming. Shulman Health Associates are getting their Christmas wishes in ways they didn’t expect, and it’s leaving us in a heck of a pickle for the new year.

Ah, it’s a bit of a comedy of errors on The Mindy Project this week. Mindy (Mindy Kaling) is forced to play doctor(-mentor) with interns or else risk losing the clinic’s hospital affiliation, to predictably screwball results. Meanwhile, an accident leaves Danny (Chris Messina) in some hot water, and he has to race against the clock to fix it, with Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) and Jeremy’s (Ed Weeks) help, before Mindy gets home and finds out. Hijinks!

If you had told me last year that The Mindy Project would bring women’s sexual empowerment to the forefront of the audience’s attention and in some ways pioneer the discourse on network TV, I would have scoffed and told you to get out of town. Yet, once more this season, Mindy skirts around sex taboos and does exactly that.

This week, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) is surprised by one of Danny’s (Chris Messina) moves in the bedroom, and it leads to a surprisingly frank discussion about the pressures women feel when it comes to their sexual prowess. While it may be masked behind the laughs and the witty one-liners, this episode becomes a soapbox for the issue of consent and comfort when it comes to sexual relationships.

We’ve all been there, right? (Don’t answer that.)

Continuing the Sunny theme on FOX tonight, Glenn Howerton reprises his role as Cliff in tonight’s episode of Mindy, acting as Mindy’s knight in shiny tax law armor when she finds herself in yet another pickle of her own making. Meanwhile, Danny’s feeling a little gun-shy about letting Mindy occupy a greater place in his life, and Jeremy and Peter are still fighting over the same girl. Just another day at Shulman and Associates.

Weekly Roundup: September 21-27

Weekly Roundup

Did you miss this? A feature we had running weekly in the spring, Weekly Roundup used to quickly summarize what I watched that week some of TV’s most noteworthy events during the week. However, we’ve grown and changed since then and it’s only appropriate these reflect this.

While she insists she doesn’t have a specific type of show, they all usually have strong but flawed lady characters, some derivation of the stubborn friends-in-love/friends-to-lovers trope, and they all make her yell at her tv a lot. She just wishes she had more hours in the day so she could actually write about this.

This week, Danny and Mindy cross a huge relationship milestone: meeting the parents! Well, his mom, at least. It’s no small feat, because you haven’t met a real foe until you meet your boyfriend’s Italian mother, especially when she raised him by herself and is none to pleased with his usual choice of paramour. Predictably, things go haywire the more Mindy tries to endear herself to Annette Castellano, but lucky for us, it mostly entails hilarious results.

Look at that, we’re back from another hiatus, and Mindy and Danny are still a legitimate couple! In more ways than one, if office gossip is to be believed. It seems like The Mindy Project spent its first two seasons building up their relationship, and now that it’s finally happened, we’re getting more than we bargained for when it comes to the personal details.

On the other hand, Danny Castellano has a lot in common with Magic Mike, because of course he does.

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY is taking over FOX!

Well, kind of.

I admit I’ve been out of the loop on recent casting news. So imagine my surprise — and delight! — to see that we’re getting not one, but three members of the gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia guest starring in two of FOX’s Tuesday night staples  in September!

First, Rob McElhenny has a spot on The Mindy Project as Morgan’s (Ike Barinholtz) cousin Lou in the season premiere tonight at 9:30pm. Look familiar to you?

Then two weeks later on September 30, Glenn Howerton reprises his role as lawyer (and past love interest) Cliff. Mindy asks Cliff for help with her taxes — how is that going to work out with new love interest Danny (Chris Messina)?

Meanwhile, Kaitlin Olson visits New Girl on September 30 at 9pm as Jess’s father’s (Rob Reiner) new girlfriend. Talk about awkward!

NEW GIRL: Jess' (Zooey Deschanel, second from L) dad (guest star Rob Reiner, second from R) arrives with his new girlfried (guest star Kaitlin Olson, R) in the "Julie Beckman's Older Sister" episode of NEW GIRL airing Tuesday, Sept. 30 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Are you excited about the gang expanding their horizons beyond Philadelphia? I’ll be tuning in, that’s for sure!

(Hey, even Cricket has had a guest spot on Bones.)

THE MINDY PROJECT: Shonda Rhimes to appear

shonda

In this week’s crazy (but very cool!) piece of casting news…

As reported by TVLine late last night, Shonda Rhimes – the creator of the Shondaland TV empire over at ABC (with such hits as Grey’s AnatomyScandal, Private Practice and the upcoming How to Get Away with Murder) – is making her acting debut on The Mindy Project playing herself in an episode this fall! Further details are being kept under wraps at the moment.

Rhimes has admitted to being a big fan of both Fox’s comedy and its creator and star Mindy Kaling on numerous occasions, and understandably, her excitement about this news is palpable:

Rhimes will shoot her appearance on the show in September, and the episode will air later this fall.

Are you excited to see Shonda on TV this fall, despite how crazy this might sound initially?

The Mindy Project will return on September 16 at 9:30/8:30c on Fox.
