GOTHAM Debriefing: “You’re not a bad guy. Just a bad cop.”

GOTH_Publicity_003_V11_R1_1_hires2_article_story_large

The Gotham premiere worked hard to create a distinctly decaying universe in which corruption is an accepted way of life for the city’s residents. With its visually stunning sets and well-known characters, it wasn’t any surprise that it would attract an audience, for curiosty’s sake, but does it manage to live up to the hype when the series really gets underway?

The answer for me, at least, is a resounding yes. Picking up where the pilot left off, the second episode manages to peel back the layers of what may be the most debauched city on television these days. Everyone in town is touched by the seedy underbelly, one way or the other, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that everyone survives by navigating layers of corruption to their own devices.

Nels
Nels knew how to operate a TV remote control before she knew how to talk. As a result, she has spent an inordinate amount of time pretending she actually lives on a soundstage. When she isn’t watching whichever show is currently capturing her heart, she is writing about how said show is currently capturing her heart. She loves pie.

Weekly Roundup: September 21-27

Weekly Roundup

Did you miss this? A feature we had running weekly in the spring, Weekly Roundup used to quickly summarize what I watched that week some of TV’s most noteworthy events during the week. However, we’ve grown and changed since then and it’s only appropriate these reflect this.

… is a young graduate student that has been way too passionate about television ever since she was little. While she insists she doesn’t have a specific type of show, they all usually have strong but flawed lady characters, some derivation of the stubborn friends-in-love/friends-to-lovers trope, and they all make her yell at her tv a lot. She just wishes she had more hours in the day so she could actually write about this.

GOTHAM Debriefing: Not your father’s comic book.

Look at that: another season, another kick at the superhero can in the search for the next great television hit! Following in the steps of Arrow on the CW and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, FOX enters the race with its own spin on the genre with Gotham. In a prequel to the Batman universe we all know and love, we get to follow the origin story, of sorts, of everyone’s favorite Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), here a rookie detective in the wildly corrupt city we’ve all grown up loving and fearing. Filled with familiar characters and stories, Gotham still manages to be a fresh take on one of the most enduring comic series in he world.

Tuning In Tonight: 09/22/14

Nels:  Finally, new TV is upon us! I’m going to take a look at Gotham and Sleepy Hollow over on FOX. What a perfect way to ring in the fall!

Cassidy: I’m so, so happy the fall TV season is starting! Tonight is a FOX kinda night for me: I’ll be watching Gotham at 8/7c and Sleepy Hollow‘s return at 9/8c. Eeek.

Lucie: Oh TV, how I love thee! Count me in as another to check out Gotham tonight. I’m also going to watch Forever on ABC at 10/9c. I’m not expecting a lot from it but Alana de la Garza is my second favourite ADA (Connie Rubirosa!) in the Law & Order Universe so I’ll be tuning in just for her. I will forever be a L&O fangirl.

Thank You Liz Lemon Team
We’re a couple of girls who really love TV, and we’re okay with that.

Fall 2014: What We’re Watching!

It’s hard to believe it, but the 2014-15 TV season is nearly upon us! We here at TYLL thought this would be a great time to talk about what we’re most looking forward to this fall. Join Nels, Cassidy and Lucie as we discuss what we’re tuning into in a few weeks.

Lucie closes out our series with her PVR-worthy picks for this fall! Expect lots of murder and mayhem with a dash of sass. (As if you hadn’t gotten enough of that from Nels and Cassidy‘s picks earlier this week.)

Lucie
Lucie was a classic 80/90s kid that grew up with the television as a babysitter. As she’s begrudgingly becomes an adult, she sadly can no longer enjoy television as mindless entertainment and subconsciously starts analyzing shows, specifically in the context of race and gender. She enjoys police procedural, strong female leads, and political dramas. She’s sarcastic and snarks a lot which may be mistaken for bashing, but it’s not…usually. She longs for the days where she can just watch TV and not parse it for subtext.

Cassidy has you covered from A to Z to, well, A to Z. She’s our go-to person for everything you need to know about the new season, because if it’s airing, she’s heard about it.
