BACKSTROM 1X13 Debriefing: It’s not common, it’s spectacular.

Backstrom cast

Well, here it is, folks.

After many inexcusable delays, my Backstrom finale recap is finally up. Just in time for FOX to unceremoniously pull the plug on the delightfully cynical procedural.

Though I’m sad about this being the end of the Sunshine Division as we know it, I’m grateful for the time we got to spend with them, and in that spirit, I’m going to give the show one last hurrah, to the best of my abilities.

Remember when Backstrom explored our detective’s Daddy Issues when Sheriff Blue rolled into town a few months ago? Well, nothing throws fuel onto a fire quite like accusing your own father of corruption and possibly murder, but that’s all in a day’s work for Everett Backstrom.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll definitely curse the TV gods.

Nels
Nels knew how to operate a TV remote control before she knew how to talk. As a result, she has spent an inordinate amount of time pretending she actually lives on a soundstage. When she isn’t watching whichever show is currently capturing her heart, she is writing about how said show is currently capturing her heart. She loves pie.

BACKSTROM 1×12 Debriefing: Like God cop, bad cop

Backstrom cast

Hell hath no fury like a brother scorned during a murder investigation!

Valentine runs into a little professional trouble, and Backstrom gets taken along for the ride when Dante Trippi ends up murdered on his doorstep. (Do barges have doorsteps?)

BACKSTROM 1X11 Debriefing: Life is a cabaret, my friends

Backstrom cast

This week, Backstrom and the unit solve the murder of a performance artist who made his share of enemies, but all is not what it seems when they probe into his life.  Plus, the detective’s softer side makes an unexpected appearance.

BACKSTROM 1X10 Debriefing: Sexual healing

(I’m sorry, that’s awful, I know.)

This week on Backstrom, the team deals with some lovin’ gone wrong. Meanwhile, the detective learns more than he bargained for about his past from an unlikely source.

BACKSTROM 1×09 Debriefing: Hey, brother

Backstrom cast

Sorry, is that too much of a spoiler alert for a title?

Ah, backstory, how you soothe my soul.

Backstrom 1×09 Debriefing || There’s nothing I love more in my TV shows than character development, and in its short run so far, Backstrom has delivered that in spades. Tonight, we get a little dash of everyone, enough to keep us guessing about our favorite Portland misfits. Plus, the mother of all reveals finally settles one question we’ve all been asking. (I love puns.)

BACKSTROM 1×08 Debriefing: Your weekly energy meeting in Moose Jaw!

Backstrom cast

(That line is infinitely funnier if you’ve ever been to Moose Jaw.)

BACKSTROM 1X08 Debriefing || This week on Backstrom, a rich socialite is murdered in a hit, another hit, and another hit and run, and Backstrom is here to flush out all the usual suspects in her exceedingly wealthy circle. Which involves Backstrom playing Cinderella at the ball (or local fundraiser), and tickles my fancy, because I never turn down an opportunity to see characters go undercover. Plus, Dr. Deb shows up to drop some truth bombs, and some romantic snafus arise, so all in all, it’s one hell of a bumpy ride.

BACKSTROM Debriefing: Backstrom vs. Backstrom

Backstrom cast

Long-lost loves, fathers, and suspects, oh my!

There’s no denying that last week’s episode of Backstrom had more layers than you could shake a stick at.

An eco-terrorist wreaks havoc across Portland, Amy returns to lend a little moral support, and Backstrom comes head-to-head with his greatest foe — his father. All in a day’s work for the Sunshine Division  in this last week’s “Enemy of my Enemies”!

BACKSTROM Debriefing: Forget it, Backstrom, it’s Chinatown

Backstrom cast

Apologies for my tardiness, everyone, but I’m finally back to talk about Backstrom. I’m a little behind, but better late than never, right? (One of these days, I will have a consistent schedule. Today is not one of those days.)

We’re back to another lighthearted foray in “Ancient, Chinese, Secret,” after the Bogeyman paid us a visit the week before that, but that doesn’t mean it’s light on the character development. We find out some surprising secrets about Paquet and Niedermayer, while the rest of the cast rubs off on one another more than they realize.

BACKSTROM Debriefing: More than one way to skin a cranky detective

Backstrom cast

Everett Backstrom may be renowned for his cynicism, but in this week’s episode of Backstrom, we witness the biggest chinks in his armor yet, thanks to a surprise visit from an ex-flame (Scrubs’ Sarah Chalke) and the compelling case of a murdered cult member who only wanted to reunite with her mother. It’s the most we’ve seen his work affect him so far, and it seems that Lt. Backstrom’s brusqueness might just be hiding some pent-up pain, after all.

BACKSTROM Debriefing: Ring of fire (starters)

Backstrom cast

This week’s episode of Backstrom isn’t nearly as dark — visually or tonally — as last week’s pilot, but that doesn’t make our resident misanthrope any less of a jerk. Especially not when his sworn enemies, in the form of two hunky firefighters, show up to stir up all kinds of childhood baggage in “Neverett.” There are fires and fights, and we can finally tell Backstrom to go fly a kite.
