EMPIRE 2X02 Debriefing: Takeover Interruptus

Empire Cast Season 2

It’s getting all Shakespearean up in here! Empire has wasted no time in its second season in upping the ante in family drama. With Lucious behind bars, Jamal is the new Heir Apparent, and nobody is happy about it. We’ve got brothers against brothers, mothers against sons, wives against husbands — no rest for the wicked, to be sure.

So what do we have to look forward to? Tons, if the first two episodes are any indication.

Nels
Nels knew how to operate a TV remote control before she knew how to talk. As a result, she has spent an inordinate amount of time pretending she actually lives on a soundstage. When she isn’t watching whichever show is currently capturing her heart, she is writing about how said show is currently capturing her heart. She loves pie.

(I apologize for the title — blame Lucious! Everyone else is.)

Did you board the Crazy Train Express on Thursday night? Talk about a wild ride this week on Empire!

Just as promised, the show delivered on the deliciously tangled webs it’s woven all season long, and every single one of those conflicts came to an explosive head in the season finale.

It’s nearly impossible to capture them all, but I couldn’t let the occasion pass without discussing some of what’s made this show so compelling to me all season — and what I’m looking forward to next year.

From the moment terminally-ill Lucious Lyon declared to his sons that only one of them would be chosen as his successor, it was obvious that Andre, Jamal and Hakeem would be pitted against each other, one way or another. No matter how many loving embraces, promises of solidarity or musical displays of support, the entire conceit of the show is that only one will win — both the crown, and their father’s affection. I said it in the pilot recap, but it’s even more true now: this show may be a glorified primetime soap, but it’s definitely Shakespearean in spirit in how it blows up the family in the name of power and greed.

A longer post about tonight’s season finale is in the works, but here are some of the most buzz-worthy moments from “Die But Once”/”Who I Am”.

EMPIRE Season Finale Photo Preview: We can’t wait!

In anticipation of this week’s season finale (already?!), we at TYLL thought it’d be fun to scroll through the episode stills from Wednesday’s double-header, because we can’t wait to see how the Lyons’ empire implodes. Which it is bound to do, if the trailer is any indication. We’ve got drama, intrigue, betrayal, and more guest stars than a Very Special Episode of SNL.

As per FOX’s press release, courtesy of The Futon Critic:

Jamal and Lucious are on their way to forming a music-centered relationship, but once again, Lucious has a secret that’s about to change everything. Hakeem decides to flirt with the enemy, while trying to figure out what the best move is for his career. Meanwhile, Cookie is cooking up a plan of her own in the all-new, special two-hour “Die But Once/Who I Am” Season Finale episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, March 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

It might be too late for me to recap the episodes I’ve neglected, but I can sure look forward to what’s to come along with all of you! Click ahead for a photo preview of “Die But Once/Who I Am”. They’ve definitely got me curious.

Are you pumped? I sure am!

First things first, I need to apologize for my recap last week. Because apparently I failed to mention the biggest plot twist of the night, which was that Jamal has a daughter! Or so ex Raven-Symoné claims. (Blame the fast-paced nature of this show — there are too many stories for my sleep-deprived brain to handle.) We make up for it this week, because last night’s episode of Empire was all about the daddy drama, for every member of the Lyon family.

I know I’m behind on Empire — as I am on every other show, as you might have gleaned if you follow this site at all — but I couldn’t resist talking a little bit about last night’s episode, because this show is so deliciously melodramatic, and I’m loving it.

The battle between Team Cookie and Team Lucious heats up, thanks in part to a little question-popping, and everyone at Empire Industries is feeling the burn.

EMPIRE Premiere Debriefing: This is what would happen if Shakespeare wrote television dramas

Empire

In one of the most highly anticipated premieres of the season, Empire finally debuted tonight on FOX, and didn’t waste any time jumping right into its world of corporate intrigue, backstabbing and family drama.

It’s not the first show about a music empire on television, but it may just have the most riding on it, given the caliber of its stars (Terence Howard and Taraji P. Henson for starters). The real question is, will it live up to the hype?
