A TO Z Sneak Peek: The Mother Gets Her Do-Over (Or, How I Met Your Mother And Didn’t Yank Your Chains For Nine Years)

Spoiler alert: She’s not dead! (I kid.)

NBC’s freshman comedy is packed with charm, but it’s got some obstacles to overcome to take off.

In the run-up to the new fall TV season next month, we here at ThankYouLizLemon thought we’d take a look at some of the new pilots that will be hitting the airwaves in the next few weeks.

I’m going to state this upfront: I’m generally not a fan of romantic comedies. Sure, once in a while when something clever comes along, I enjoy a good love story as much as anyone. Most of the time, I can’t be bothered with them, simply because I find the formula so tired, and the various roadblocks on the way to happily-ever-after trite.

Needless to say, my expectations were way, way low when it came to NBC’s new comedy A to Z. When the series was first revealed at upfronts in May, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that this was How I Met Your Mother redux, and the fact that the actress who played the title character in that show (Cristin Milioti) is the lead in this one did nothing to dispel that qualm.

While there are many similarities to CBS’ dearly-departed stalwart, A to Z still somehow manages to feel fresh, despite not being particularly original in concept, and to my great shock, is downright charming.

Nels
Nels knew how to operate a TV remote control before she knew how to talk. As a result, she has spent an inordinate amount of time pretending she actually lives on a soundstage. When she isn’t watching whichever show is currently capturing her heart, she is writing about how said show is currently capturing her heart. She loves pie.

Fall 2014: What We’re Watching!

It’s hard to believe it, but the 2014-15 TV season is nearly upon us! We here at TYLL thought this would be a great time to talk about what we’re most looking forward to this fall. Join Nels, Cassidy and Lucie as we discuss what we’re tuning into in a few weeks.

Lucie closes out our series with her PVR-worthy picks for this fall! Expect lots of murder and mayhem with a dash of sass. (As if you hadn’t gotten enough of that from Nels and Cassidy‘s picks earlier this week.)

Lucie
Lucie was a classic 80/90s kid that grew up with the television as a babysitter. As she’s begrudgingly becomes an adult, she sadly can no longer enjoy television as mindless entertainment and subconsciously starts analyzing shows, specifically in the context of race and gender. She enjoys police procedural, strong female leads, and political dramas. She’s sarcastic and snarks a lot which may be mistaken for bashing, but it’s not…usually. She longs for the days where she can just watch TV and not parse it for subtext.

SELFIE Sneak Peek: #Ouch

ABC’s new comedy doles out the clichés, but does it have enough heart to separate it from the pack?

In the run-up to the new fall TV season next month, we here at ThankYouLizLemon thought we’d take a look at some of the new pilots that will be hitting the airwaves in the next few weeks.

It seems like every few years, Hollywood likes to revisit the Pygmalion chestnut with some sort of new twist, which inevitably falls into the same old formulaic trope. Girl meets Boy, Boy claims girl needs to be “fixed,” Boy supposedly fixes Girl, Girl warms Boy’s heart, Girl and Boy live happily ever after. ABC’s Selfie is no different, despite the thoroughly twenty-first-century spin on the tale thanks to the commentary on our culture’s obsession with social media. That being said, Selfie has enough going for it, mostly thanks to stars Karen Gillan and John Cho, that viewers might just be #TuningIn to give this a shot.

Cassidy has you covered from A to Z to, well, A to Z. She’s our go-to person for everything you need to know about the new season, because if it’s airing, she’s heard about it.

… is a young graduate student that has been way too passionate about television ever since she was little. While she insists she doesn’t have a specific type of show, they all usually have strong but flawed lady characters, some derivation of the stubborn friends-in-love/friends-to-lovers trope, and they all make her yell at her tv a lot. She just wishes she had more hours in the day so she could actually write about this.

Watch RED BAND SOCIETY now!

After a clever (and kind) promotional campaign in which we were asked to raise 100k dollars for charity, the full Red Band Society pilot has been made available for preview on FOX.com and Hulu (you can also watch it below). There’s a catch: it’s only available for 100 hours (until Tuesday)!
