Goodbye, BONES

If there is something I’ve realized after watching, or in the time leading up to, series finales – does it feel like many long-running and well-loved shows are ending in March, or is it just me? – is that many people love to share their experiences and their feelings about something they loved. It’s kind of like a wake: you celebrate a life well-lived by sharing nice memories about someone you cherished. You mourn by relishing in other people’s similar experiences, finding comfort in how they touched your lives in familiar ways. You talk about how you met, their impact on your life, and all the good times you had.

So I guess this piece is all about mourning and celebrating life, rather than lamenting death. In many ways, this is particularly relevant with a show like Bones: superficially about death (with its crime-solving premise), but actually about family, and the celebration of life in spite of darkness.

So I’ll toss my hat into the ring, and try to (briefly) share my background with the show…

… is a young graduate student that has been way too passionate about television ever since she was little. While she insists she doesn’t have a specific type of show, they all usually have strong but flawed lady characters, some derivation of the stubborn friends-in-love/friends-to-lovers trope, and they all make her yell at her tv a lot. She just wishes she had more hours in the day so she could actually write about this.

It’s here.

We’ve known this moment was coming for the last year, and particularly, the last three months… but it is hard to believe it’s happening. We wish the next few lines could just be *muffled crying* over and over, to reflect how we are really feeling, but let’s do this, one more time.

On March 28th at 9/8c, Bones will air its final episode after twelve years on the air. (And it will air a rerun of that episode on April 1st.) As we’ve mentioned in the past couple of stills posts, the episode is the second part to 12×11. Per the press release/synopsis, the team will be still looking for evidence to track Kovac (who’s still at large) down. Brennan will experience a setback, so everyone else will have to put everything they’ve learnt from her to the test. After they learnt that Kovac is likely receiving outside help, and has a hideout, Booth and Brennan will go after him.

These stills won’t be the first look you’ll get to the finale, as the promo that FOX aired after last week’s episode included snippets of the next three episodes.

So, please enjoy the Bones 12×12 stills below, one last time. (Hard to believe this is the last stills post forever.)

BONES 12×11 Stills: “The Day in the Life”

The end is nigh.

You’ll easily realize this seeing the events in the stills, and reading the synopsis for the episode. It’s hard to believe it’s all happening.

“The Day in the Life” airs on March 21st at 9/8c on FOX. In the penultimate episode, the characters’ final story begins to unfold – in many cases, it’s the payoff for their season-long storylines: Brennan testifies in Zack’s trial, Aubrey and Jessica come to terms with their future together, Angela has some big news. (And based on the fact Felicia and Michelle are back, it’s safe to say that Cam and Arastoo might finally make it official – see: all those twinkly lights.) Not everything is happy or hopeful: the team also finds out Kovac has escaped, so Booth will try to protect himself and those closest to him from Kovac’s most dangerous plan yet. (You can read the entire press release here.)

Some other people present in the episode are Avalon Harmonia (played by the wonderful Cyndi Lauper), Caroline,Christine and Karen!

BONES 12×10 Stills: “The Radioactive Panthers in the Party”

It’s hard (and sad!) to believe, but we are down to the last 3 episodes of the show. The producers have hinted at the last two episodes being part of a two-parter, so this might be the last “standalone” episode ever. Let’s take a moment to savor that. (If it’s not, we will definitely do that next week as well.)

In “The Radioactive Panthers in the Party,” airing on March 14th at 9/8c, the team investigates the murder of an aspiring writer/director whose burned and bruised body crash-landed on top of a car. Elsewhere, Betty White returns as Dr. Beth Mayer, and Brennan seeks out her opinion on the meaning passion in the workplace. (Wendell is the squintern of the week!)

BONES 12×07 Stills: “The Scare in the Score”

We honestly hope your plans for Saint Valentine’s included really scared (and sad) for some of your favorite tv characters, because that’s what Bones might be doing. As if last week’s sad case wasn’t enough, am I right? The second half of the final season starts with what promises to be an intense installment.

In “The Scare in the Score,” airing on February 14th at 9/8c, this past week’s newest (serial) killer makes a reappearance, as a series of corpses tied to Booth’s Army past appear all over the District — thus, Booth needs to find him before he finds him. Meanwhile, Max hides a serious medical procedure from his daughter, leaving her to grapple with her dad’s trust and mortality, as well as her own family’s safety. (Talk about poor timing…)

Apart from Max, Arastoo, Christine and Caroline are all back.

BONES 12×06 Stills: “The Flaw in the Saw”

If you paid attention during SDCC time, you might have heard about a lumberjack episode they teased that sounded more like a joke than anything… But, it is a real thing (as you probably saw on social media while they shot this one) and here are the stills for the episode, airing on February 7th at 9/8c! (And, it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.)

As you can read in the press release, the dismembered body of Phyllis Paul, golfer-turned-lumberjack, brings the team to the Lumber Sports Regional Championships. At this competition, Booth and Brennan discover many secrets that could have lead to Phyllis’ murder, including an affair with a married rival. Meanwhile, Hodgins secretly analyzes some bacteria that he believes could exonerate Zack.

Fuentes is the squintern of the week, and Dave Thomas and David Koechner guest star.

BONES 12×05 Stills: “The Tutor in the Tussle”

The stills for “The Tutor in the Tussle” have just been released. Episode wil air on January 31st at 9/8c!

Per the press release, the team will try to find the murderer of a tutor of privileged kids — was it disgruntled parents, or maybe the roommate with a criminal record? Meanwhile, Brennan is frustrated with the voice in her audiobook, and tries to prove she can record it herself. Dr. Fisher and Karen Defts are back, and so is Aubrey’s dad.

BONES 12×04 Stills: “The Price for the Past”

In this week’s episode, the past will come back to haunt our favorite team.

Per the press release, the team will investigate the murder of someone from Booth and Brennan’s past. (From the promo after last week’s episode, you can probably guess.) But also, Aubrey faces a moral dilemma of his own when he discovers his dad (played by John Boyd’s real father, and character actor, Guy Boyd) is back in the picture.

And, Caroline and Jessica are also back!

We have some more Bones stills for you guys!

On Tuesday, January 17th at 9/8c, there will be some retirement home drama on FOX, as you can see in the Bones 12×03 stills below.

In this episode, the team will investigate the murder of an old man found in an acid site (and will get sucked into the aforementioned retirement home drama). As they explore the case, talks of marriage and kids will dominate the conversation back at the lab. This episode guest stars 2016 survivors Hal Holbrook, June Squibb, and Ed Asner, among others.

BONES 12×02 Stills: The Brain in the Bot

Happy New Year, everyone.

After the intense season premiere last night, the second episode will deal with the murder of a man involved with creating artificial intelligence bots. Thus, they will have to determine whether one of his own AI creations was programmed to kill him. Meanwhile, Brennan also plans a special surprise for her 40th birthday, as we saw in the promo after the premiere last night. (Does she know how surprise birthday parties work? Also: aw!)

The episode will air on next week — Tuesday, January 10 at 9/8c, and will see the return of Daisy, Max and Christine, among others. You can read the full press release here.
